Rhode Island: It's All in Our Backyard

Our Stories

Personal meaning, great design

Luna & Stella – moon and star in Italian – is all about celebrating relationships. “People are simply drawn to the idea of a product that symbolizes their relationships, their connections,” says Suzanne Ellis Wernevi, founder and creative force behind this wildly popular and successful line of contemporary birthstone jewelry. She uses precious and semi-precious birthstones in her designs to represent the important people in one’s life. And the piece can evolve over time – you just add more birthstones to an existing piece for any of life’s big moments. “I like the permanence of jewelry. A lot of fashion has become disposable and I wanted to work with something that endures.” Luna & Stella’s recently-launched Hope Anchor Charm Necklace is inspired by the anchor on the Rhode Island state flag. Suzanne is totally optimistic about the future of the business. “Rhode Island is just right in terms of design, manufacturing and business resources – from casting and plating to design and marketing.” See more photos.

Open Doors 9 Yards 4-Edit

Going the whole 9 yards

9 Yards, a pilot program funded by the Governor’s Workforce Board and supported by the Rhode Island Foundation, started in July, 2013 with 15 men in Medium Security prison at the ACI. It worked with these 15 men for a year and a half, supporting them in finding the right path. Watch video.

  • Most programs just work in one risk area. 9 Yards provides support in all risk areas – education, employment, housing, behavioral therapy, mentoring, and addiction treatment.
  • Most programs just work in prison or outside of prison. 9 Yards provides support for 9 months in prison and at least 6 months after release with the goal of moving clients towards skilled employment and higher education.
  • Most programs work with the easy to serve. 9 Yards works with high risk individuals to have the best chance of preventing future incarceration.
  • Most programs do not take advantage of prison time. For 9 months in prison, 9 Yards focuses on education, occupational training, and behavioral change.

Edesia: Global Nutrition Solutions

Founded as a non-profit in 2009, Edesia produces over 8,500 metric tons of peanut-based, ready-to-use nutritional supplements for children in countries affected by wars, famines and natural disasters.  Their supplements  are distributed around the world by humanitarian agencies that include UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). With a current staff of 73 employees — hailing from 23 countries of origin — Edesia has helped treat and prevent malnutrition for nearly 3 million children in over 46 countries. When the company outgrew its two buildings in Providence, Navyn Salem – its founder and executive director – decided to build an 85,000 square-foot plant in the Quonset Business Park, an attractive location because of its rail access that will allow Edesia to bring in peanuts, sugar and vitamins by train. Last month,  Edesia was honored with the 2015 Providence Business News Manufacturing Award for “Workplace Development and Productivity.”

Brewing Success: Bucket Brewery

On this cold bright early morning in Pawtucket, Nate Broomfield is already grinding the grain for brewing a batch of Bucket Brewery’s Red Rye Lager – 33rd Inning. Broomfield went from home brewing to a tiny pilot  space – a 375 square foot room with retooled equipment.  Two years ago, the pilot brewery closed and construction began on a full scale production brewery. Located in an old mill at 545 Pawtucket Avenue, the new space is nearly 10 times larger at 3400 square feet. With a 10 BBL brewhouse, the production capacity grew ten-fold as well. A recent posting on Facebook let their friends know that the Lager was ready: “Finally kegging up 33rd Inning for wide release! Visit our events listing page to see where to find us!” Bucket Brewery hosts tours and tastings every Saturday, as well as the Friday Night Sound Check music and art series. “We try to find ways to intersect with people’s lives,” says Broomfield. “Through tastings at liquor stores, a running club sponsorship, live events.”

Brewing Success: Foolproof Brewing Company

At Foolproof Brewing Company in Pawtucket, beer is not just a beverage but an experience: they believe a beer style should be absolutely perfect for that particular occasion – that’s why they have names like Backyahd, Barstool, and Raincloud. Nick Garrison launched Foolproof two years ago out of his triple passion for beer, entrepreneurship and Rhode Island. Those passions and a solid business plan have made the brewing company not only the largest brewery in Rhode Island but has led to its regional status – it is now distributed throughout New England. Next stop for Garrison and Foolproof: the measured growth that it will take to become a national brand. Men’s Journal recently named Foolproof’s Belgian Saison – La Ferme Urbaine – one of the 101 Best Beers in America. To experience Foolproof, stop in for a tasting and tour, held Friday evenings from 5 – 7 p.m. and Saturday afternoons from 1 – 5 p.m.
