Michelle DePlante of the International Institute of Rhode Island reminds us of Rhode Island’s diverse heritage. “Rhode Island is great because of its people – both U.S. and foreign-born who call our state home. There are some great stories of foreign-born individuals who are proud to be Rhode Islanders and are contributing to our state.” Check out the IIRI website for a gallery of these stories.
For example: Omar and Cesin Curi opened Los Andes, a thriving Bolivian restaurant on Chalkstone Avenue in Providence. Luis Matos, born in Portugal, is an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court. And Richlieu Norris, originally of Liberia, is a middle school teacher who hopes to go into education administration.
The Providence Journal featured several of these stories on Sunday.
