Rhode Island: It's All in Our Backyard

Kick off the fall exploring RI land trusts right in Our Backyard!

September 10, 2013 by linchpin

Beginning in the early 1970’s Rhode Islanders grew concerned that the character of our communities was disappearing.  They worried that we were losing the farms and forests, beautiful landscapes, scenic shorelines along rivers and ponds that define the fabric of Rhode Island.   So around the state, citizens took action.  They started non-profit organizations with a mission of protecting the special places in our communities for everyone to enjoy.  These organizations are land trusts.

There’s no better way to enjoy autumn in Rhode Island than the farm tours, guided twilight walks, and birdwatching programs.  “Land Trust Days is an opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful natural areas the state has to offer, yet that are still not well known,” points out Rupert Friday, the director of the Rhode Island Land Trust Council, which organized the second annual event. “They’re hidden gems you can discover this month.” Friday notes that most of the properties protected by the state’s 47 land trusts “are just a short drive away.  They’re in your backyards!” he says.
